How to calculate Profit / Gains & Loss?
There are two methods to calculate profit or loss on cryptocurrencies: 1. Unit Calculation and 2. Amount Calculation.
1. Unit Calculation:
In the first method you calculate profit by simply subtracting the selling price from the cost price of the cryptocurrency. Basically you are calculating the difference between the current value of your holdings to the price at which you bought them.
This is Unit Calculation: In this method, the investment amount is expressed as a number of units of the selected coin.
For example let’s say you bought 1 BTC at $20000 and selling it at $50000, you can calculate your investment profit by subtracting $50000 – $20000 = $30000.
The formula for unit calculation is
Profit = (Sell price - Buy price) * Investment units
According to this formula you’ve made a profit of 150% ($30000).
Unit Calculation: The profit or loss is calculated based on the change in the value of those units over time.
For example, if you buy at $10 and sell at $15 then you’ve made a profit of $5. If you bought 100 units of coin at price $10 and sold it at $15 then you made a profit of $500.
2. Amount Calculation:
The second method is Amount calculation. In this mode, the investment amount is expressed as a value in a specific currency. The profit or loss is calculated based on the change in the exchange rate between the selected currency and the coin.
For example, if you invest $1000 in Coin X, and the exchange rate between the USD and Coin X is 1:10, then you would have 10,000 units of Coin X. If the exchange rate changes to 1:15, then the value of your investment would become 15,000 units of Coin X, which is equivalent to $1500. This means you have made a profit of $1500 – $1000 = $500.
The formula for profit calculation in the “amount” mode would be:
Profit = (Sell price - Buy price) * Investment amount / Buy price
Both the calculation methods will help you determine the size of your investment, but in different ways.
In the first method you’re calculating the profit on number of units and in the second method you’re calculating the profit on the amount of fiat money you invested.
Other than buy price and sell price there is also fee that you need to take into account. So instead of doing all of this calculation manually you let the tool do the work for you. The profit calculator takes care of all the complex calculations, making it much easier for you to determine your potential profit or loss.
How to Use Crypto Profit Calculator?
Step 1:
First choose the Fiat currency that you used to buy the cryptocurrency, trade or exchange. The tool supports all major world currencies. Drop down the currency list, search for the currency of your choice and select the currency. For example USD $ (United States Dollar) or Euro € (European Euro).
Step 2:
Choose the cryptocurrency that you’re planning to buy, trade or already bought. By default Bitcoin is selected, you can change it to any cryptocurrency from the drop-down list. For example select ETH if you’re doing calculation for Ethereum or BNB. The tool supports 1000s of cryptocurrencies. Just search for your favorite crypto and select it.
Upon choosing the currency and crypto the buy price and sell price field gets filled accordingly. The buy price is the current price of the chosen coin for the chosen currency pair. The sell price field displays 10% more than the current buy price. Whenever either the coin or currency selection changes, both the Buy Price and Sell Price fields will be updated with the current price and 10% more than the current price, respectively. You can change the value of both buy price and sell price to any value you desire.
Step 3:
Enter the invested amount in the Investment field. There are two modes that you can switch between. In Amount mode you enter the fiat amount that you invested (Example: $10000). In Unit mode you need to enter the unit of the coin / token (Example: 9.1 BTC, 2 ETH, 3000 DOGE), the number of units of the coin that you want to purchase or own.
Just below the investment field the tool calculates and shows how many units of the coin that you can buy for the entered value. If it is switched unit mode it shows how much the coin is worth based on the current market price.
Step 4:
After you enter the invested amount, fill up the buy price and sell price fields. The buy price is your initial crypto purchase price at which you purchased your cryptocurrency and the sell price can be the selling crypto price or the price at which you sold your crypto.
Once you’ve entered the amount invested, the buy price and sell price; the tool automatically calculates based on your input and displays the result below.
Optionally, you can also enter the investment and exit fees which you want to deduct from the total crypto profit made.
Step 5:
In the “Investment Fee” input field enter the fee (in percentage) that the exchange platform charged you for buying or trading the asset. Similarly in the “Exit Fee” field enter the fee (in percentage) that the platform charged you for selling or getting out of the trade.
Based on your inputs on the investment amount, buy price, sell price, investment fee, and exit fee the tool does the calculation and displays your investment P&L (Profit and Loss) below.
Investment P&L
The tool calculates and displays the total investment fee, total exit fee, profit amount, profit percentage, and total value.
Formula used by the calculator for calculating P&L:
- If the calculation mode is set to “amounts”, the tool calculates the profit based on the amount invested in the selected coin.
- If the calculation mode is set to “units”, the tool calculates the profit based on the number of units of the investment.
Investment:
- Investment in Amounts: The number of units of the asset that can be bought with the investment amount. This is calculated as:
Investment / Buy Price
- Investment in Units: The investment amount invested in the asset, expressed in the selected currency. This is calculated as:
Investment * Buy Price
Total Investment Fee:
The fee charged on the investment.
- If calculation mode is in “Amounts” this is calculated as
Total Investment Fee = (Investment * Investment Fee) / 100
- If calculation mode is in “Units” this is calculated as
Total Investment Fee = (Investment * Buy Price) * (Entry Fee / 100)
Total Exit Fee:
The fee charged on the selling price.
- If the calculation mode is set to “Amounts”, the formula for calculating the Total Exit Fee should be:
Total Exit Fee = (Investment / Buy Price) * Sell Price * (Exit Fee / 100)
- If calculation mode is in “Units” the formula for calculating the Total Exit Fee should be:
Total Exit Fee = (Investment * Sell Price) * (Exit Fee / 100)
Amount (Profit / Loss):
The profit (or loss) from the investment.
- If the calculation mode is in “Amounts”, the profit amount can be calculated as follows:
Profit = (Sell Price * (Investment / Buy Price)) - (Investment - Total Investment Fee - Total Exit Fee)
- If calculation mode is in “Units”, the profit amount is calculated as follows:
Profit = (Investment Amount * Sell Price) - (Investment Amount * Buy Price + Total Investment Fee + Total Exit Fee)
Profit Percentage:
The profit (or loss) as a percentage of the investment.
- Amount mode percentage calculation:
(Profit Amount / Investment) * 100
- Unit mode percentage calculation:
(Profit Amount / (Buy Price * Invested Amount)) * 100
Total Value:
The value of the investment after profit (or loss) has been accounted for.
- Amount mode formula:
Total Value = Investment + Profit Amount
- Unit mode formula
Total Value = (Investment * Buy Price) + Profit Amount
